🚨 IMMEDIATE STEPS — Do These Right Now

If your iPhone just got wet, stop reading and do these 5 things first:
  1. TURN IT OFF. Hold side button + volume down. Slide to power off. Do this NOW.
  2. DO NOT CHARGE IT. Not even for a second. Not to see if it works. Charging = dead.
  3. Remove the case. Water trapped under a case continues corroding.
  4. Pat the outside dry. Cloth or tissue. Gentle. Tilt and tap to clear ports.
  5. WhatsApp us or come straight in. Don't wait.

Why Phuket Is a Water Damage Hotspot

Phuket is one of the most beautiful places in the world — and one of the most dangerous for smartphones. Think about what you do here: swimming in the ocean, pool parties, snorkelling, kayaking, Songkran water festival, monsoon rainstorms that arrive with zero warning.

We treat water-damaged iPhones every single day in Phuket. The most common scenarios:

  • Dropped in hotel pool or infinity pool (chlorinated water)
  • Swept off a beach towel by a wave or drop in the sea
  • Caught in a sudden tropical downpour without a bag
  • Fell out of a pocket during a longtail boat trip
  • Condensation from air conditioning after coming in from extreme heat
  • Accidental toilet drop (everyone's least favourite)

The #1 Mistake That Destroys Water-Damaged iPhones

Charging it while wet. This kills more iPhones than the initial water exposure. Here's why: when electricity flows through wet circuitry, it causes immediate electrolytic corrosion — essentially etching permanent damage into the copper traces and components on the logic board. A phone that might have been 90% recoverable becomes 10% recoverable in seconds.

This is followed closely by:

  • Leaving it overnight "to dry" — salt and chlorine continue corroding with every passing hour
  • Using a hair dryer — heat warps internal components and drives moisture deeper
  • Putting it in rice — a popular myth with zero scientific backing; wastes critical time
  • Pressing buttons repeatedly "to see if it works" — pushes water deeper into the board

Sea Water vs Pool Water vs Rain — Why It Matters

Not all water damage is equal. Understanding the type of water helps you gauge urgency:

Sea Water (Highest Urgency)

Salt water is the most corrosive. As sea water evaporates, salt crystals form on the logic board and continue etching circuitry even after the visible water is gone. A phone dropped in the ocean and left overnight may be beyond repair even if it looked "dry" in the morning. If your iPhone went in the sea, treat this as a maximum-urgency emergency — don't wait, come straight to us.

Pool Water (High Urgency)

Pool water contains chlorine (a strong oxidiser) and various other chemicals. It's less immediately corrosive than sea water but still far more damaging than fresh water. Urgency: high — aim to be at a repair shop within 1–2 hours.

Rain / Fresh Water (Moderate Urgency)

Fresh water has much lower mineral and chemical content. A brief rain exposure on a newer IP-rated iPhone may cause no damage at all. But if the phone got significantly wet or you notice any symptoms (screen flickering, audio issues, charging problems), still bring it in promptly.

What "IP68 Waterproof" Actually Means

iPhone 12 through iPhone 15 models carry IP68 ratings — but this marketing language creates false confidence. Here's what IP68 actually means:

  • Tested in a lab under controlled conditions: still, fresh water, up to 6 metres, for 30 minutes
  • The rating is for a new phone — the water resistance seals degrade over time with normal use
  • It does not cover: salt water, chlorinated pool water, high-pressure water (shower, waves), or water if the phone has any previous damage (including hairline cracks)
  • Apple's warranty explicitly does not cover water damage on any iPhone, including IP68 models

We regularly repair "waterproof" iPhone 14 and 15 models that were damaged by Phuket's sea and pools. Don't rely on IP ratings as a safety net.

Our Water Damage Recovery Process

When you bring a water-damaged iPhone to us, here's what happens:

  1. Rapid assessment (5 min) — we check for visible corrosion, test for short circuits, assess water indicator
  2. Disassembly — logic board removed and separated from all components
  3. Ultrasonic cleaning bath (30–60 min) — removes salt, chlorine, minerals, organic matter
  4. 99% isopropyl alcohol rinse — eliminates residual moisture and neutralises remaining contaminants
  5. Controlled drying — never with heat; controlled temperature environment
  6. Component-by-component testing — screen, cameras, Face ID, cellular, WiFi, charging, audio
  7. Replace damaged components — corroded capacitors, damaged ICs replaced if needed
  8. Re-seal — adhesive water resistance re-applied before reassembly
  9. Full test before return — we only return a device when we're confident in the repair

Recovery Rates — What to Expect

We always give realistic expectations. Based on our Phuket repair history:

  • Within 1 hour, fresh/rain water: ~95% recovery rate
  • Within 1 hour, pool water: ~85% recovery rate
  • Within 1 hour, sea water: ~80% recovery rate
  • 1–6 hours after incident: ~70–80% recovery rate
  • 6–24 hours after incident: ~55–70% recovery rate
  • After charging while wet: ~30–50% recovery rate
  • 24–48+ hours after incident: ~30–50% recovery rate

If recovery isn't possible, we only charge ฿500 for the diagnostic. We'll always tell you the odds before starting paid work.

What About My Photos and Data?

If the device is successfully repaired, all your data comes back intact — because we're restoring the device to working order, not replacing storage. Photos, messages, WhatsApp chats, everything is preserved.

If the storage chip itself is damaged (rare), we can attempt chip-level extraction. Success depends on the extent of damage to the NAND chip.

For the future: Enable iCloud backup (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now). When your phone is connected to WiFi and charging, it backs up automatically. This is the single best insurance policy for your phone data.

Cost of Water Damage Repair in Phuket

See our full pricing on the water damage repair page. In summary: ultrasonic cleaning starts from ฿1,500. Full repair including component replacement ranges ฿1,500–฿3,500. Complex board-level repair ฿2,500–฿4,500. We quote after diagnosis, before starting.

Water Damage FAQs

Probably not, if you act fast. Turn it off immediately, don't charge it, and bring it to us within 1–2 hours. Our pool water recovery rate within 1 hour is ~85%. Don't put it in rice — come straight to us.
IP68 rating covers still, fresh water in lab conditions. Chlorinated pool water, salt water, waves, and aged seals all defeat IP ratings. Apple's warranty doesn't cover water damage on any model.
Charging a wet iPhone causes electrolytic short circuits — the most common way of turning a recoverable phone into a dead one. Bring it in immediately. Our success rate on charged-while-wet devices is lower (30–50%) but still worth trying. Data recovery is often still possible.
The shorter the wait, the better the outcome. Every hour matters — especially with salt water. Aim for within 1–2 hours for best results. Within 24 hours is still reasonable. After 48 hours, success rates drop significantly.
Many comprehensive travel insurance policies include mobile phone cover. Check your policy for "accidental damage" or "personal electronics" cover. We provide detailed repair receipts for insurance claims.
Debunked myth. Rice does nothing useful for water damage — it can't draw moisture out of sealed electronics, and starch particles can make cleaning harder. You're wasting critical recovery time. Come to us instead.
